My gift to you this weekend is this:
Since its release, all of my favorite enviro-bloggers have been singing the praises of the Story of Stuff. I'm not sure why I put off watching it for so long. I'd like to say it's because the 20 minute runtime sounds like forever in this, the era of YouTube, but really I think I was afraid that it would make me uncomfortable. I'm already trying to consume less and maybe I was afraid that the Story of Stuff would make me feel guilty for the things I've not cut back on yet.
Fortunately, there are no guilt trips contained therein. Annie Leonard is decidedly un-preachy and, dare I say, makes learning fun. The movie is really fantastic, and although it didn't tell me anything that I wasn't already at least peripherally aware of, it really puts the chain of consumerism in focus in a way that is incredibly easy to understand.
So there's your homework for the weekend, homies. If you haven't watched the Story of Stuff yet, take 20 minutes and go watch it now. It's time well spent, I promise you.
